Chicago Cultural Plan 2012! What's culture to you? It could be the SSO or The Empty Bottle, Taste of Chicago or the Tamale Guy, The Art Institute or strolling by the murals of Pilsen - we all have our own interpretations, stories and hopes for the future.

Starting tomorrow night, we will come together to discuss the state of culture in Chicago today and our ideas for the future. Be part of the legacy and come on out! Weetu to Lead Marketing Campaign for Chicago Cultural Plan Initiative
Branding and Social Media Campaigns to Begin in February

Weetu will helm the social media and marketing outreach for the Chicago Cultural Plan 2012. As the communications component of the City of Chicago’s selected planning team led by Lord Cultural Resources, weetu’s role will be to develop an overall branding campaign to be implemented across social media and traditional marketing channels.

In partnership with Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, this plan will deliver a set of recommended initiatives that support the Chicago arts and promote its economic growth while enhancing the city’s reputation as a global cultural destination.

“Weetu is proud to be part of this historical initiative. It’s not often that one gets the opportunity to help shape a great city’s cultural future,” said Carly Cannell, President of weetu. “Our approach throughout this campaign will be in the spirit of Burnham’s ‘make no small plans.’ We want our communications effort to challenge Chicagoans to dream big and take ownership of this cultural plan.”

“We are honored to be working with weetu on this project. Weetu's innovative approach, principles of inclusive public engagement, and leading-edge design emulate the elements we wish to reflect in Chicago's cultural plan,” said Orit Sarfaty, Project Lead for Lord Team.

Flash back fun of 2011- During a holiday stay at the Hard Rock Hotel, weetu Carly discovered her carpet on the floor. Well, not "her's" per se, but a collection she and Kevin designed for Durkan Commercial (part of The Mohawk Group) a few years back. Part of the "body" collection, this particular pattern called "tattoo" (for obvious reasons) was notably one of Durkan's top sellers the year it was released (or so we were told).

What was not expected was how the pattern would be motifified (new word) all over the room. The repeated tattoo pattern was extracted for pillow adornment, as well as into a giant wall graphic.

It can be assumed that a similar pattern has been utilized for tramp stamps all over the world... so perhaps not falling under any trademarks or copyright law... so we'll just take it as flattery. Glad it worked out for the room designers of the Hard Rock Hotel. It looked pretty "hot" (Paris Hilton circa 2003).

the fanciest printer stand in america

Did you know that Tyler made furniture? Neither did he. It only took nine grueling months (perhaps a slight exaggeration), but he finally finished his very own printer stand project. "It is now triumphantly holding up my printers and a variety of other print type things. Thanks to the gang for helping me out with it and for the use of the weetuwerks™ Fabrication Lounge!" states Mallory.

wee dined, wee designed- but not in that order

weetu and ERG International teamed up for a reflective collaboration at this years Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA) Dining By Design Chicago Benefit at the Merchandise Mart (November 3–5, 2011). This weekend long event included a cocktail party, public/student viewing and a gala dinner.

This seamless partnership resulted in a highly celebrated design that not only integrated ERG's manufacturing capabilities, but multiple talents from the weetu zoo. "Our main objective was to not only create a unique experience, but also tie into DIFFA's mission", states weetu Carly.

The concept:

From Narcissus’s doomed love of his own reflection to the mirror veiling tradition in preventing the recently departed from staying on earth to Hitchcock’s complex set of infinitely reflecting mirrors in the mother's bedroom of “Psycho,” the mirror has long been a symbolic element of self-reflective searching into one’s inner psyche and at times other worldly realms.

weetu/ERG’s Dining by Design concept utilized a canopy of reflective surfaces to create an environment of altered perspectives, thus reinforcing the shifting views of people living positive and our society’s ever changing perception of AIDS.

The video projected (created by weetu zoo's Tyler, Jorge and Martin) was to give the impression of hiding in one's medicine cabinet, watching as individuals prepare themselves for the outside world. (Thanks to actors Michael Bever, Daniel Knobloch, Renate Martin and Fawzia Mirza-You guys rocked!)

Also thanks to Claudia Peebles for bringing ERG & weetu together; Rode Bros for lending the gorgeous flooring and all the weetu peeps for continued collaboration, play and enthusiasm.

Finally a truck show with no rain! Thank you sky! The 7th Annual Truck Show had an amazing turn out and lots of talented designers and artists. It was such a blast to be a part of it all that we were able to forget all the blood, sweat and tears that went into getting there. The atmosphere carried an energetic vibe and lots of positivity. Weetu's weeinvent truck was proud to host a steady stream of traffic. Thanks to everybody who came out and the support from afar for those who couldn't make it.

Wood and concrete bench with wood (and original decking screws still attached) from the old Coney Island Boardwalk. The whole piece is soaked in the echoes of hotdog-eating contests, cotton candy and nervous first-kisses at sunset.

Designed with children in mind, it's a play rug that you can climb into. Like a cushy slanket for the floor. The interior was very plush and comfortable- which made us think it should be modified as small urban guest "environments.

I thought that the designboom mart was the best part of the show and this "Make a Wish" ring was part of those selections. Some may call this section of artist sold design items "gimmicky", but I call it damn refreshing. It was the most soulful, enthusiastic and fun part of ICFF and could teach the larger manufacturers a thing or two. Also part of this section were jewelry wax molds entitled "historical disasters" and rubber eraser "brass knuckles". I had to have the yellow "Make a Wish" ring and look forward to burning my knuckle hair at the next special occasion.

I have no idea what they'd go with, but I am totally compelled by these corrugated cardboard light spheres. Calm and soothing with a subtle reference to The Death Star.

This weekend weetu's Carly Cannell and Tyler Mallory will go head-to-head in a photo contest covering ICFF in New York. Jorge laid down the challenges and both contestants accepted the assignments. Happy Valentines Day everybody! weetu loves you.

Today is also a good day to share our love for the number 3. Third place, that is. weetu was so amused at Architizer's Design Challenge: NYC's Worst Bathroom Competition that wee just had to submit. Kenny Lao and his disgusting "Trainspotting" inspired bathroom needed some magic! Though we had the best intentions to focus on this little competition, timing favored plenitude of new client projects as the deadline neared. Snowpocalypse 2011 wasn't even enough to slow us down.

Led by weetu designstar Carmen Cervantes, the team submitted "Kenny's BathBox" in the final few moments prior to the deadline. Phew! The intent behind Kenny's BathBox was to create a well-defined, yet, deceivingly open space by defining 2 primary zones.

1. The raised tiled “box” for toilet and shower

2. The linear wood surfaced dry zone for vanity/sink and storage

Kenny had some specific requirements for his future bathroom, such as the ability to drink directly from the faucet and a preference to not have a partition around the shower. The design succeeds in not only addressing all of the items on Kenny's wish list, but opens the tiny space up to feel more spacious than it is. It also leaves the current systems intact, with only minimal modifications. The overall approach is not only easy on the eyes, but also on the pocketbook.

We had a great time putting it together, but had chalked it up to a fun learning experience. A week later Architizer reported that weetu was selected as an honoree. Why so excited about 3rd place? Carmen states "Good things come in 3! Maybe next time, if we don't wait until the last moment and spend more than a day on it, we'll win the grand prize!" A fine goal, nonetheless. As they say- you have to play to win and next time we may just be #1.

don't eat the, uh... blue snow

Wind chills of negative 20 can't stop the progress of some branding maniacs! Today a big, black van full of young looking creatives jumped out with tools and cameras. After their departure, Wee wandered over to investigate only to find these HP logos carved into our snow banks and throughout Wicker Park. Logos were accompanied by emotive slogans such as "everybody shares"... and "everybody feels". Yes, HP, perhaps everybody does... but less on cold days like today.

Wee just wonder why trendy Wicker Park was targeted by HP rather than the preferred cooler, hipper Mac counterpart. Take notice real estate guru's! If Mac was out in Humboldt Park today burning apples into the snow there may be a shift in the housing market.

We recorded between 3 - 6 hours worth of footage following her around the pond, of us feeding, and eventually of her not making through the winter and dying. I would like something similar to an introduction to a national geographic show. With the cool editing and background music. She ended up passing away, so I want it to also be sad. January presents a time where WEE spend a few moments reflecting on the year past in order to learn and celebrate as WEE seize a new year. 2010, not a lot of tears are being shed at your passing, but along with the exciting challenges you presented, WEETU was fortunate with client projects while exploring new ideas and places. WEE got our hands dirty, got our pictures taken, got to travel around and Martin even got a decent haircut!

Boxes were a common theme, made of the packaging the furniture came in - or so it was implied. (A) The Vitra exhibit seemed to be construction of raw palettes, while (B) Ersa boasted of their "box in a box" idea. It was a little reminiscent of the early 90's, but reflective of getting back to basics. Ersa says that "their retail concept consists of natural, deliberately un-designed factory look that are both casual and polished".

C. The perimeter of Wagner's exhibit was comprised of one of their wood chairs. It created a warm, sophisticated look and complex texture. A dark rich wood bar was located in the center of the interior space, along with a small hospitality dining area serving elegant cuisine. A huge departure from the typical tradeshow booth.
D & E. Fringe also dominated a lot of exhibits these past days. Seriously, the same white fringe, sometimes longer than others. Sometimes in contrast to raw building or shipping materials.
F. All we can wonder about this one is, "which automotive manufacturer went under and sold you their car show booth?"
G. Interstuhl was a rare, yet successful, example of intentional wandering. It was approachable from all angles while providing a complementary backdrop to their products. Nicely executed.

H. A definite tree and apple fetish was present at the show, as mentioned in our earlier post. This showroom went the extra mile by branding their apples. These will not be included in our pie.
I. Hall of mirrors... this was the best. Several manufacturers left the fringe on the side to make room for mirrors. Some reflected the product on the ceiling, others went full blown circus- fun! We spent a little too much time in this showroom for the wrong reasons.

This showroom was just asleep. Well, to be fair, that one guy just woke up.

orgatec 2010 - furniture, felt, fake trees, free apples

Welcome to the weetu view of orgatec 2010 - Modern Office and Facility. Orgatec is not unlike NeoCon in the states, a tradeshow that we are all too familiar with, only it occurs every other year here in Cologne. There was a lot of the familiar, but a few things grabbed our attention... not always for the right reasons.
If you've every been to a tradeshow, you know one of the few perks are the free giveaways. There were a few offerings of traditional gummy treats... but there was rarely a booth without a bowl full of apples. Apples everywhere! Piiiiie tonight!

A. Weetu is trading in all of our studio desks for these babies. Sure, we've seen this one before - Sonic Chair - but this was the first time we tried it out. It rocked AND was convenient to work at.
B. The 2 biggest differences between NeoCon and Orgatec: Orgatec is covered in felt and the male attendees have much cooler suits. Check out buzzispace.com for some amazing acoustical additions to any office space. Specifically the buzzihood, buzzibooth and buzzilight.

C. More felt, a lot of work cubbies, but Vitra's has a sexy zipper.
D. Ersa, out of Turkey, offers this cool donut lounge. The cool part is the magazine rack in the center which would also be convenient for displaying records.
E. Also from Ersa, these simple angular sofa sectionals offset from one another.
F. More of a showpiece, Frau Schneider enjoyed a 5 minute nap in Vitra's 15 minute nap lounge.
G. Every big manufacturer, and even a few small ones, have one. This is Vitra's electrically operated table. Stand up, sit down, fight fight fight.

H. Interstuhl introduced a new chair called the AirPad. (I guess all the negative feedback on the new IPad's name didn't hit Germany). Aside from comfy and ergonomic, the sheer panels were a little bit sexy.
I. A more modern, less office-like design for a transformable table. This one had a hand crank, but it's peppery counterpart was electric.
J. Herman Miller also debut their new ergonomic task chair - Sayl... starting with the wood and string model prototypes.
K. Not the best photo angle to demonstrate it, the SAYL is named after it's "sail" like back structure. The rubber webbing was really quite elegant and architectural in it's structure, much like that of a beautifully designed bridge.
L. Certainly not a looker, this chair is deluxe for the super exec who's worker-bee by day and lazy-boy by night. This is the mPosition by Profi.m

M. More felt? These transformable loungers got people in suits onto the floor in public... reminiscent of Vitra's lap belt we saw at both Salone Mobile and NeoCon this past year.
O. We've seen these in craftpaper, but now we see them in fluorescent plastics by Vange.be
P. Vange also showed this intelligent, economical, 100% recycled fold out chair called Desile, after designer Christian Desile.

Q. Interstuhl also has an industrial side... and we like it! Helen was determined to try on the model's size 10 yellow shoes. I seriously need these stools in my kitchen.
R. Drumroll please!!! The official ugliest chair of the show: This one. What's scary is not so much the supply, but the thought this chair is at all in demand in 2010. Yikes!

Nothing in life is free... and today my lovely German host put me to work. After a full day of collaborating on the exhibition, domestic duties had to be conquered. The bank, the bio-market, and the dreaded laundry.

Scouring the products at a foreign grocery store is one of my favorite tourist past times. Not only do the type of products fascinate me, but the variety of packaging design is always entertaining. Today, however, the product winner at the bio-market was chosen for it's hilarious name, not so much the packaging.

Next, we wheeled the laundry to the laundry cleaning establishment place. There was a lot to figure out, but with the help of graphic descriptions and red wine, the tasks were successfully achieved.

Between loads, Frau Schneider and I strolled the grounds of the nearby university. The sun was low, the joggers high, the cyclists FAST! I feigned intellectual for a moment while pretending to read Helen's Dostoyevsky book.

Upon landing to Cologne, napping and getting settled in, Weetu Carly hit the Gloria Theater with friends Frau Schneider (of The Sustainable Love Corporation) and Irakli for the SMILE Party, featuring DJ's Marc Lansley, Denis Stockhausen, Okinawa 69 and Motor City Drum Ensemble.

Today we went on a walkabout to the Kolumba Museum.
The Kolumba is one of Helen's (Frau Schneider) favorites in her now hometown. The architecture is fantastic, but the exhibit has been the same for a while. We were happy to discover that installations have turned over... and they were so cool. The Kolumba – Archdiocese of Cologne was recently completed by Peter Zumthor. The new building was to conserve the existing pieces of two thousand years of architectural history, while uniting it into a single building: the archaeological excavation finds with the foundations of the earlier Romanesque church, the ruins of the late Gothic Kolumba Church, as well as the Chapel of the Madonna in the Ruins, which was consecrated in 1950.

This is definitely a place where you should take the stairs.

The new architecture is a stunning backdrop to the work and ruins. Simple, yet amazingly detailed. Weetu Carly lusted after the lighting alone. Dario Villalba's La Espera, 1974, was one of the favs. The shadows cast, as it spun in the room, changed with each angle, resembling a peapod to someone in the fetal position.

Another crazy room was an installation by the artist Krimhild Becker. The room allows nature and art to connect where different cultures meet. That ensures that serious & happy; found & thought up things and art & kitsch not be separated from one another. It's playful and astonishing all at the same time. A plastic dinosaur in an atrium with a skull beneath it? Monkey faces and creepy kewpie doll heads? Get some Halloween ideas peeps!

Though most everything is closed on Sunday's in Cologne, we stumbled upon a pretty entertaining flea market. Scales, Fur and Beads dominated the selection. Oddly enough, I could say the same thing after walking into the H & M in Chicago. Though severely tempted by some sunglasses, lace mask and green quilted house frock, no purchases were made. Sorry economy.

Carly Cannell and Jorge Orozco-Cordero of weetu and weetree are recognized as a dynamic collaborative in the Fall issue of CS Interiors, which you can read online (page 92-93) at media.modernluxury.com. Always demonstrating that multiple minds are better than one in striving for innovation, the versatile weetu + weetree studios continue to explore new ideas, especially in a sluggish market. Cannell, a Californian native, shares, "I have a hard time welcoming winter, but I do enjoy the idea of throwing on my leopard print snuggie* and getting my hands dirty in the workshop. We have a long list of internal projects to create."

The next generation of the weetree wall is also in the works. Spring should be an exciting season to see what the wee groups produce.

*Cannell does not currently own a snuggie, and it cannot be confirmed if it's on her wishlist this coming holiday season.

Tres makes press in the August 2010 issue of Hospitality Design as well as in the fall/winter 2010 NEWH Magazine, the Hospitality Industry Network. Trespass stole #3 (so much cooler than #1) in this year's Radical Innovation Competition held at HD in Las Vegas. As quoted in the article by judge James Woods of Keen Partners – "Trespass was the best proposal I've seen to address a major and increasing blight on the suburban landscape," say Woods.

Judge Simon Turner, President of Global Development at Starwood Hotels and Resorts adds – "These concepts are very timely as we, at Starwood, continue to see increasing non-traditional development opportunities in urban environments and, an increased focus on incorporating green practices into existing and new build hotels as a clear trend. The current challenging economic times have placed more of a premium on striking a balance between innovation and practicality than in past years". On August 20th, Weetu Carly was invited to participate in the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI) DESIGN FUTURES: THE INTERIORS ENTITY REGIONAL THINK TANKS, hosted at Harrington College of Design.

IFI’s Design Futures: The Interiors Entity initiative seeks to clearly understand the core need for the Interiors discipline and to better understand its value, relevance, identity and responsibility. This global IFI initiative intends to explore Interior Design as currently positioned and understood, within the fullest parameters of the discipline (including research, education and practice). This is a collaborative and consensus focused effort which will involve members, experts and generalists from around the world. The Harrington College of Design’s Think Tank is one of nearly two dozen being held in North, South, Central and Latin America representing the Americas. Additional Think Tanks occur in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

The all day forum included professionals from both large and small firms, educators, researchers, and associated trades people from the midwest region. This diversity in both profession and experience provided multiple perspectives around Interior Design and what it may hold in the future. Needless to say, Carly's brain was sore for a few days following, but it was worth the effort to be a part of such a thoughtful and enjoyable group.

Yep, it just wouldn't be a Guerrilla Truck show without everyone soaking in the rain. This year was an even bigger turnout than last year, despite the weather.

Our very own Tyler Mallory generously donated his mad photo skillz for DIFFA's truck. His photo exhibition was all about portraits of the people who make a difference at the many Chicago organizations working to provide services for those living with HIV and AIDS. Many of them are HIV positive themselves. For them, the path to finding their right place has taken many different routes. Through initial feelings of anger, resignation, confusion and fear, they have all found in themselves a way to stand taller than their diagnosis and continue living.

Each image starts as a blank square to let the personality dominate, to remember that the human spirit is unbowed and that even after a positive diagnosis, there is much to discover about life and personal strength.

Last day we're Saloning it. Today we hit the Brazilian Design Show, Interni's Think Tank, PAC (Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea) and Trienalle. We'll keep it short, as it's the weekend for you all, but it was another amazing day. We're calling it museum day, as that was the vibe. Think tank was enjoyable, especially in the contrasting setting of the university. The color story was bothersome, but the ideas were playful. And, for the most part, interactive. PAC was not exactly part of Salone, but we were told by a friend that the Armando Testa exhibit was a must see... and it was! Google him now.

Trienalle is a must visit if you've never been to Milan, but it didn't knock our socks off today. Maybe blame it on the rain? The exhibit of up-and-coming Polish designers was the most mentionable... we want that felt topo-rug!

Ah, yes, some may have noticed that there is no weeTV today. No, the Icelandic ash cloud has not blocked the signal. It's more that Museums frown on video recording, so you'll have to make do with some stealthily shot stills. Shhh...don't tell anyone till we leave the country.

We haven't exactly referenced that the sky is falling (ash cloud), but this travel glitch is certainly very present to all Salon goers. Let's hope that miss magma cools her jets so we can hit the air before our dogs run out of kibble. In the meantime, we hope you've enjoyed our little journey and thanks for tuning in. Today we hit the ground running – covering Designer's Block, Droog, Ventura Lambrate and the remainder of Zona Tortona. Let's skip to the highlights (as our feet and livers need soaking). Ventura Lambrate was excellent – so much to see and certainly the most variety with an experiment of art, furniture and design. Lambrate is considered the most up-and-coming zones of quality design. To us it felt the most intimate, as if we stumbled along a great little secret area – yet everybody knows about it.

Zona Tortona is more like the designers version of Mardi Gras. The streets are packed with aggressive show goers who only slow down to consume a beverage or two between showrooms and shops. The clear gem was Swarovski's Crystal Palace. We've never seen such a demonstration of sparkle (and if you know weetu, that's saying a lot). It was something to awe and, oddly enough, we were a little wobbly coming out of there as if we fell down the rabbit's hole. It was also a nice palette cleanser from playing a human instrument at the Royal College of Art a few moments earlier. What seemed like neutral vinyl upholstered pads, to our dismay, turned out to be naked boy backs. You'll have to see the video to get the visual.

DAY 2= TRANSFORMERS + NEW BLOOD

The train ride into Rho today conjured reminiscent appreciation for the "denim kit". Yes, head to toe denim is often a no-no, but when rocked in Italy it really is something to admire. And we did.
Today weetu saw a lot more along the lines of yesterday, but a walk around "Salone Satellite" (a juried hall of innovative, young designers from around the world) left us convinced that in the very near future your newspaper will be able to quickly convert into a cappuccino machine, or at the very least a comfortable chair.

Satellite's showcase of new thinking was a reminder that you don't have to carry a big name to make an impact. Cut-away materials and transforming furniture ruled the day as tomorrow's innovators showed how a strong imagination and solid prototypes go a long way even if their creations haven't yet been picked up by a big line. It's only a matter of time for some. For the others, surely they were as inspired by their peers as we were.

As with any organized show, especially at this scale, there does seem to be a bit of restraint. The buzz is that Salone, or even Fuori Salone, is lacking the radical that, perhaps, has been more present in shows past. Is this reflective of current economic times or simply a wave of needing to play it more safe? These are questions circulating among a diverse range of Salone attendees (press, architects, artists, etc.). Weetu are not seasoned pros at this particular show, but do identify that an element of mind blowing in actual new products are fewer than imagined. Yet, the energy and vibe this city possesses does not reflect anything lacking. In fact, it's exciting how alive it is.

DAY 1= NUBBY + SHINY

Weetu siamo arrivati Milano for Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2010 last night. We quickly headed over to Zona Tortona to soak up the energy. People packed the streets in celebration, design gawking and... well, drinking. With a later start, we missed the climax of the pre-events, but got our first taste of what's to come this week – which was something of Campari combined with "the world really does revolve around design". Tasty, tasty uptopia.

Today, however, Weetu was fresh to conquer 4 halls (5-7-8-12) of the show. It is clear that color and textures are in the lead for impact. There was a consistency in cross-hatch exaggerated woven textures– be it in wools, rubber, resin or polyurethane. Color combinations were bold and delicious, Milano style– combined with plastics and rubber and shiny.

Though the terrain of independent and up-and-coming is still to be covered this week, the show stopper, thus far, was Moroso. This was clearly the exhibit where our heart rates elevated in pure joy and excitement. Aside from Moroso's alluring tangibles, their exhibit space was defined by styrofoam forms– "helix twist again" designed by Karmelina Martina. Was it die-cut or molded styrofoam? How do you even do that?!?

Engage Indie Rock Engines...

My former University of Oregon Arch school buddy, Daniel Wu has a lot going on these days. In lieu of torturing himself in big architectural firms working long hours for pennies post-graduation, he moved to Hong Kong and became a heart throb A-list actor/director. I moved to Chicago and found new meaning in the word "Winter". Um... wise choice Dan.
Last week he shared his latest project, finally pulling from his architectural roots! A collaborative effort with friend Edward Huang, Daniel created a unique bamboo structure for the 2009 Hong Kong/Shen Zhen Biennale. You still got it Wu!

Weetu jumped left to LA for The National Council of La Raza's ALMA Awards, a tribute awards ceremony celebrating pioneering Latinos in music, television and sports. The event aired September 18th on ABC. Weetu was backstage to film a public service announcement around voting initiatives and the upcoming census. This year some of the biggest names in entertainment were in attendance, including co-hosts Eva Longoria Parker and George Lopez.

If you happened to watch the show, you may also have caught the last PSA weetu created for NCLR... unless you have Tivo or had to use the facilities. (Clearly we spent a little too much time behind the video cam or in traffic and not enough time taking cool pictures).

Weetu made their 3rd Innagural mecca to Miami for the HD Boutique Conference, held September 14-15th. Though some sun was soaked, it wasn't all mojitos. The first day of the conference, Carly was up at the break of dawn (or so it seemed) to meet with the NEWH Sustainable Hospitality Committee. The committee discussed goals to meet important initiatives, including their primary mission to "Lead the hospitality industry to educate and promote sustainable practices that achieve a balance between environment, economics and social equity".

The NEWH Sustainable Hospitality Website will be refined and expanded over the next several months. If you're in the hospitality industry now is the time to sponsor, as this is sure to be the resource directory for Sustainable Hospitality.

The glo Pillow is an alternative to the traditional alarm clock. It was designed with teammate Eoin McNally in response to a brief to create a product which helps to combat the pressures of a "24 hour" lifestyle.

The pillow uses an LED fabric substrate below the surface to wake the user using light. This substrate also functions as a display, showing the time on the pillows surface using the grid of LEDs below.

40 minutes before the pre-set alarm time the pillow begins to glow and gently brings the user out of sleep. This natural waking process helps to set the circadian rhythm or "body clock" and results in more healthy sleep/wake patterns.

Good People Everywhere

Small, furry zoo editor, Martin Nelson is sending Good People your way. That is, at least, if your way is in Anaheim, CA, Birmingham, AL or Chicago, IL.

Good People, a twisty little 25-minute film made with some of Chicago's top talent in front of and behind the camera was co-produced, cut and mixed by Martin (if you want to know about the rest of the cast or crew go find their blogs, jeez. Or email Martin; he'll probably help you out). The film played to whoops and hollers at the Santa Fe Film Festival earlier this year, to guffaws and harumphs at Indie Fest USA in Disneyland this past Monday, August 24th and will screen, undoubtedly to yodeling and spontaneous line dancing, at both the 11th Annual Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival in Birmingham in September and the 45th Annual Chicago International Film Festival this October in, well, Chicago.

Martin is particularly excited about the Birmingham show because much of his "what-is-it-you-do-again?" family lives there and can now be unclear about his career first hand and on a large screen. He's particularly excited about the Chicago show because he won't have to buy plane tickets for the entire weetu zoo to come along. You all can come too.

Ah, it is so nice to be recognized. Even when it is outside your field. Even when it is for the work of others. Even when recognition requires no more than submission and patience.

FinalCutters,, a website for Final Cut Pro editors has been running a "Rig of the Day" page and last Sunday, they featured mine. With a folding desk conceived (vaguely) by me, designed (entirely) by Daniel Knobloch and built (ably) by Jason Meyer, this is truly a zoo production.

With the bulk of the computer gear hidden away in the closet and a Murphy bed on the wall opposite the collapsable desk, the space happily can serve double duty as edit suite and guest bedroom. The one shot on the FinalCutters site doesn't truly do the room justice so here are a few more hi-rez photos of the entire setup.

Not a bad view for the third floor.

You'll notice no keyboard or mouse. All work is done by sheer gastrointestinal fortitude.

I really am going to have to put some books on those shelves one of these days.

And maybe get a face.

With open hearts and booze in hand, Carly and Mia took on The 44th Ward Dinner Party hostage in an effort to raise funds for DIFFA. We're not sure if it was their heavy pours or the excess of cleavage but the two raised almost $800 in a mere two hours. They are considering quitting their day jobs. Special thanks to the peeps at The 44th Ward Dinner Party and everyone that came out to support and oggle.

Textiles gone wild

weetu decided to expand their knowledge of fabrics by attending Texworld USA in New York last week. Texworld USA is an exhibit of over 135 fabric companies from around the world.

It's always good to branch out and see what is happening in other creative industries – and we were very excited to see what the fabric collections were going to be for Fall/Winter 2010/2011.

The result? We have to admit - we are a bit depressed. We'd show you the pictures we took, but we don't want to depress you too. Lets just say that when you go shopping next year for some new hip clothes for fall you'll be selecting from cream-whites, chalk and camel colors, dusty tones like old rose and our favorite - taupe! Will that color ever go away?

If you are wondering where to purchase metallic zebra prints - weetu can tell you!

We discovered some new light-weight fabrics, interesting 3D and translucent materials, and learned about the challenges of creating eco-friendly textiles. Did you know that there is no set standard in the industry for environmental certification? For instance, manufacturers that claim their materials are organic might not have the processes in place to track the materials through the supply chain. It is difficult to trace how the raw fiber was created and what the chemical processes were to create the finished garment.

This trip was a good reminder that when selecting textiles or other finish materials, we really need to be diligent in researching where the material comes from. Go beyond what the manufacturer's sales people are telling you.

What industry is weetu checking out next? I'm looking for what's new in gourmet chocolate creations - does anyone know where that convention is?

There's nothing like turning a corner in the west village only to stumble upon the greatest invention ever (at the time) - stripper pole tricycle. I mean, wow!! Weetu made some inquiries to discover A) yes, it's rentable. B) no they couldn't take our $20 to go around the block because C) they were about to start an event at 9pm. Evidently, everyone was waiting for "Marla" to show up and for the night to kick in so the lights would show up better

Waiting for our outdoor table to open up across the street, we waited anxiously for the show to begin. Here's a clip of the launch:

Later in the evening, when we retreated to the new Standard outdoor courtyard, Carly was enjoying the night so much that she muttered "only Marla on her stripper pole riding into the plaza could make this more perfect"... and just moments later they rode by... the tricycle still pulling her on her pole. Impressed by her athleticism and endurance, we applauded with the rest of the witnesses. Carly, feeling magical, made some additional wishes quickly... but they didn't come true - YET.

my plastic dreams came true

I love plastic... from straws to toys to stuff that can go on my body. During a visit to NYC last week, we heard about the Melissa shoe sample sale. OMG. Weetu has been a fan of these plastic creations since we accidentally discovered them. My first pair, purchased in a run down Bakers Shoe store on State Street, was a sexy neon yellow and pink high heel jubilee. I googled Melissa" immediately, but alas, they had very little presence here in the US.

Like a kid in a candy store, I drowned myself in plastic wonderfulness in search for the coolest size 10's available at the sample sale. Priced at $25-$45 a pair, let's just say more than one pair came home to live in Chicago. Yes, a very indulgent, perhaps shallow, but certainly sweaty episode, and I'm thankful there isn't footage to end up on You Tube.

New socks! I love colorful fun socks. Unfortunately, my stock of fun
socks has been upsettingly low for the last few years. So, I went
through my sock drawer only to find that most of my socks had holes in
them. At the same time, I stumbled upon an online sock store right
when I realized my socks were low.

I started wearing crazy socks I got a job right out of school that
required a tie and coat. Man I hated the wardrobe. I'm you can only do
so much with crazy ties and really, if you wear a Donald Duck tie -
well you can only do that so many times while meeting with the big guy
in the corner office. However,if you wear bright red socks, most
people wont even notice unless you wear incredibly short slacks

Here's to socks. Oh - fyi, these socks don't match on purpose. You get
3 socks - all a variation of the same design but with different
colors. How cool is that.

As if the "bean" wasn't enough to entertain us for hours, one of the new Burnham Pavilions by UnStudio opened on Friday, June 19. A couple of us scooted down there in between rain storms Friday to check it out. It's pretty sweet. Although it's supposed to be enjoyed by all as an interactive piece, it was difficult not to cringe when witnessing a traffic jam of baby strollers spinning around on the pavilion's incredibly white whiteness. We ended up being too lazy to come back later in the evening for the opening party, but really wanted to see Daniel Sauter's interactive lighting program. That will be a treat on a warm summer night's bike ride.

The Zaha Pavilion is on a little delay due to an issue with the skin, but the framework is up.

Thanks to all of those brave souls that fronted in the rain for The Guerrilla Truck Show last Tuesday. Morlen Sinoway and DIFFA Chicago put on a great show. Trucks backed up to the loading docks in Fulton market revealing tons of great work by different artists. Soaked to the bone, it was reminiscent of tailgating with beer, wine and art (and without having to attend a football game afterwards). Good times! Kudos to the artists as well. We went home with a sweet "coil lamp" created by Craighton Berman.

When posed with the challenge of submitting an RFQ for our local Wicker Park-Bucktown Chamber of Commerce marketing campaign, we opened the zoo cages and formed the perfect WEETUzoo team. With our award winning marketing, film, editing, sound, graphics and photography team we strapped on our sneakers and hit the streets to explore all that the neighborhoods have to offer. After 36 hours, a half dozen falafel sandwiches, miles of walking the streets and climbing buildings, we put together this little snipit of entertainment to highlight a fraction of what Wicker Park and Bucktown have to offer. More Than Loud

My friend Billy makes guitars. Real Guitars. Loud Guitars. Guitars that scare parents. Builds 'em by hand from the ground up. And his signature sound comes from pickups he winds - yep, by hand - on a spindle he conjured out of an old fan motor. Not much gets done by hand start-to-finish any more. In our modern every day world, we pretty much expect something to be processed with automation somewhere along the line, whether it's our cell phone calls or the cheese on our sandwich.

Not here.

To a craftsman, "by hand" means "repeatable", but not "duplicate". Born of a common parent, each of these guitars grows into what is essentially a solo performance. Billy and I get together to jam weekly, and occasionally I bring the camera along to see what he's cooking on.
